Probably the oldest fishing village in the world? Once upon a time many many years ago Saaremaa was only a spot in the Baltic Sea. The spot was so small that it only fitted a small village surrounded by the sea from all sides. There were only happy people living in the cottages. The thing these people loved the most was sitting in front of their cottages and fishing straight from the sea. So the village was gradually called the fishing village.
One morning the people of the fishing village noticed that the sea would not reach their cottages any more. Nobody figured out whether the sea had retreated or the soil under the village expanded. After a few years the sea had moved so far from the village that the people had to travel a while to reach it. The women stayed home with the children while the men left for the sea before sunrise. In the evenings everyone would gather around the bonfire to cook some delicious fish.
Over the years the island kept growing until the sea was not seen from the fishing village. Only a cool seabreeze reminded the people that the sea had once been very close. The island reached such a size that other villages were built around the fishing village. Today the probably oldest fishing village is situated in the middle of the island- in Valjala. We do not know is it all truth or not, but for making judgement you have to come to visit the place and make your own decision. |
